This thin-body porcelain cup is a meditative vessel where Buddhist symbolism, calligraphic discipline, and tactile ceramic form come together in quiet harmony.

The lotus petal motif is outlined in underglaze red, its tone resembling the glow of early morning embers. Softly diffused on the porcelain surface, the red carries a muted, matte warmth, recalling the cinnabar-edged petals of lotus offerings placed before the Buddha. Within each petal, blue-and-white scrolling foliage unfolds gently, its deep cobalt tone echoing still water and hidden depth. The interaction between cool blue and warm red creates a restrained visual dialogue—contrasting yet balanced, vivid yet composed.

This effect is achieved through the dot-rubbing inner-impressing technique. Blue pigment is applied with staggered, point-based brushwork, allowing the scrolling patterns to build layers and tonal depth, much like ink spreading across paper. The underglaze red follows the moulded contours with controlled precision, settling into the porcelain body like cinnabar set within bone. Each line carries the subtle rhythm of the hand, preserving a sense of breath and movement within the discipline of form.

At the centre of the lotus petals rests the Six-Syllable Mantra, rendered in Sanskrit script. The characters are drawn with restraint and reverence, following ritual structure while retaining the quiet elegance of literati brushwork. The strokes begin firmly and resolve softly, balancing sacred gravity with visual grace. Interwoven with blue and red, the mantra appears not as overt declaration but as a calm presence, like a miniature sutra concealed within porcelain, allowing contemplation to arise naturally through use.

The small reclining foot form reflects the Chinese aesthetic philosophy of hidden ingenuity. The body curves inward before settling gently into the foot, reminiscent of folded garments at rest. In the hand, the foot nestles naturally into the palm, allowing warmth to pass slowly through the thin porcelain wall. When placed on the table, the cup sits with composed stability, embodying humility and balance. Between holding and resting, the character of the vessel unfolds fully, with structure and spirit quietly contained within the notion of “reclining.”
