This doucai chicken cup is a vessel of spiritual symbolism and quiet reverence, where Buddhist philosophy, layered ornamentation, and classical ceramic form come together in balanced harmony.

The lotus holds a central place in Buddhist imagery, often used to represent the pure Dharma body of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. Rooted in mud yet rising unstained, the lotus embodies wisdom and compassion free from defilement, symbolising the ability to remain clear and transcendent within the complexities of worldly life. In this cup, the lotus becomes both visual focus and spiritual anchor, offering a calm presence that unfolds through repeated use.

On the exterior, three Vajra lotuses are rendered in doucai technique, each distinguished by subtle variation in colour and detail. Together, they represent the Western Three Saints of Pure Land Buddhism: Amitābha Buddha, Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva, and Mahāsthāmaprāpta Bodhisattva. The lotus accented with alun-red and fine gilding symbolises Amitābha Buddha, embodying infinite light and boundless compassion. The lotus to the left represents Avalokiteśvara, associated with mercy and attentive care, while the lotus to the right represents Mahāsthāmaprāpta, symbolising the power of wisdom and clarity. Their arrangement forms a unified spiritual triad, conveying protection, guidance, and salvation.

Together, the Western Three Saints embody the sustaining forces of the Pure Land, symbolising the ideal realm of ultimate peace, clarity, and liberation. Translated into ceramic form, this imagery offers not a didactic statement, but a quiet invitation—allowing the cup to function as a daily reminder of calm intention and spiritual grounding.

Inside the cup, a willow leaf motif is subtly inner-impressed beneath the glaze. Emerging gently from within the porcelain body, the willow’s graceful flexibility complements the lotus’s purity, reinforcing a balance between softness and strength, stillness and resilience. The inner decoration remains restrained, allowing meaning to surface gradually through use rather than immediate display.

The form follows the traditional chicken cup silhouette, compact and balanced, well suited for mindful gongfu tea drinking. Its proportions encourage attentive handling and unhurried sipping, allowing tea, vessel, and contemplation to coexist naturally.
